We’ve been awarded BII Sustainability Champion status

The award makes us one of the first pub companies to have our whole managed estate (43 pubs across the South West) recognised for commitment to sustainability. St Austell Brewery also received the company edition of the award, for the work we do at head office.

The BII Sustainability Champion Award is awarded to those in the hospitality sector who have gone above and beyond to demonstrate their commitment to running a sustainable business.

Elle Sambrook, our head of sustainability said:

St Austell has a heavy focus on cutting food waste across the entire business, with a goal of reducing this by 20% by 2025.

Just one of the ways we’re focusing on sustainability is through our ground-breaking partnership with Olio, a food sharing app. Together we redistribute any surplus pub meals to the community rather than going to compost, helping to tackle food insecurity while also reducing St Austell’s wastage. We are the first pub company to partner with Olio.

We recognise the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for energy as well as being proud to hold zero waste to landfill status across our managed pub estate. We’ve long been an advocate for zero use of single-use plastics.

As a business, we have already invested in 26 electric vehicle charging points, at our head offices and select pubs, with a view to rolling out across our full pub estate by 2028, further expanding the South West’s charging network.

We are an official partner of the Marine Conservation Society and host regular litter picks nearby our pubs, for internal teams and local communities. During the most recent beach clean, at the Great Western Beach in Newquay, over 2,000 pieces of plastic and polystyrene were collected.

Our Charitable Trust has donated over £1 million to South West charities and good causes in its local communities, since it was established in 2003.

Several of our tenanted business partners have also been awarded Sustainability Champion status for the fantastic work they do at their pubs including the Pityme Inn (St Minver), the Weavers Inn (Bodmin), the Victoria Inn (Threemilestone) and the Polgooth Inn (St Austell).
