Top Dog-Friendly Beaches in Cornwall
A long with pasties, pirates and cream teas, Cornwall is famous for its stunning coastline, making it the proud home of some of the most beautiful beaches in the UK.
Cornish beaches are made even more special by the fact that many of them are dog-friendly, so your four-legged friend can explore the long stretches of golden sand and hidden coves along with you.
To help you plan your next dog walk along this picturesque coastline, here’s our guide to some of the best dog-friendly beaches in Cornwall…
1. Sennen Cove
Sennen Cove, perched on the tip of the county near Land’s End, is one of Cornwall’s most iconic beaches. This expansive golden beach is a haven for both dogs and their owners; with its wide-open space, it’s perfect for a game of fetch, a long walk along the shore and a good run around. The clear, turquoise waters are ideal for dogs who love to splash in the waves, and the surrounding cliffs provide stunning scenery.
In the summer months, Sennen Cove Beach has restricted hours for dogs, allowing them on the sand before 10am and after 6pm from May 15th to September 30th. However, during the colder months - from October 1st to May 14th - the beach becomes fully dog-friendly, allowing dogs to enjoy the beach at any time of day.
Nearby Gwynver Beach offers a year-round dog-friendly alternative; tucked away from the main tourist trail, this quieter beach is ideal for a peaceful outing with your dog. The stunning stretch of white sand has plenty of room for your pup to run and play. After a day on the beach, you can explore the charming village of Sennen, where you’ll find dog-friendly pubs to relax in, like the Old Success Inn.
2. Nanjizal
For those who prefer a more secluded spot, Nanjizal Beach is a hidden gem on Cornwall’s rugged West coast. Located just south of Land’s End, this remote and unspoiled beach offers a truly unique experience.
Known for its stunning rock formations, including the famous "Song of the Sea" cave, Nanjizal is perfect for adventurous dogs who love to explore. The beach is accessed via a scenic walk, which adds to its off-the-beaten-path appeal, and is a wonderful spot for a refreshing paddle.
Dogs are welcome on Nanjizal Beach all year round, so they can enjoy the natural beauty of this hidden paradise with you - however, the descent to the beach involves some steep steps and rocky areas, so this is something to be mindful of with smaller or older dogs! The peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views make Nanjizal a must-visit for dog owners looking for something truly special.
3. Fistral Beach
Newquay is one of Cornwall’s most popular seaside towns, and Fistral Beach is its crown jewel. Known as the UK’s surfing capital, Fistral is also a fantastic spot for dogs. The beach is dog-friendly throughout the year, and with its vast stretch of sand and lively atmosphere, it’s a great place for dogs to socialise and burn off some energy.
The waves at Fistral are a hit with surfers, but there’s plenty of space for dogs to play and enjoy the sea breeze. After your beach day, you can take a stroll into Newquay, where you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly cafes, pubs and shops to explore. Why not pop into the nearby Fort Inn for a pint of Proper Dog - our pup-friendly tipple that’s a firm favourite with the local seadogs!
4. Porthkidney Sands
Porthkidney Sands, located near St Ives, is often referred to as a "dog's paradise," and for good reason. This expansive, dune-backed beach offers miles of soft sand, perfect for dogs to run free. The beach is known for its tranquillity, making it a peaceful spot to escape the busier beaches nearby, and offers sweeping views across the whole St Ives bay.
Porthkidney’s sweeping shoreline is great for dogs who love to swim, though check for any tidal currents before going too deep. Porthkidney Sands is dog-friendly all year round, and its sheer size means there’s always plenty of space, even during peak season - perfect for a long, leisurely walk with your furry friend.
5. Porthmeor Beach
St Ives is one of Cornwall’s most picturesque towns, and its beaches are just as beautiful. Porthmeor Beach, with its golden sands and crystal-clear waters, is a favourite among locals and visitors alike.
Dogs are welcome to enjoy this stunning beach all day in the off-peak season, with a seasonal dog ban between 10am and 6pm from the 15th of May to the 30th September.
The combination of natural beauty and prime location makes Porthmeor Beach a fantastic choice for a dog-friendly day out, and the nearby Tate St Ives and the town’s bustling art scene make it a haven for culture lovers. After a day of exploring the beach and town, you and your dog can relax in one of the many dog-friendly pubs in St Ives - we love the Lifeboat Inn for its cosy window seats and expansive sea views.
6. Charlestown
Charlestown is a charming village that feels like a step back in time, with its historic harbour and traditional granite cottages. While Charlestown Beach isn't dog-friendly, there are some fantastic nearby options where dogs are welcome year-round.
Porthpean Beach, located just a short drive away from Charlestown, is a sheltered sandy cove that welcomes dogs from October to Easter. The beach offers a peaceful setting with calm waters, making it a great place for dogs and their owners to enjoy a splash or a leisurely walk along the shore.
Another nearby gem is Par Sands Beach, just a few miles from Charlestown. This expansive beach is dog-friendly year-round, offering plenty of space for your dog to run and play. With its long stretch of golden sand and gentle waves, Par Sands is ideal for dogs who love the freedom of an open beach. The beach is also backed by sand dunes, providing a more rugged terrain for adventurous pups to sniff around.
7. Readymoney Cove
Tucked away in the picturesque town of Fowey, Readymoney Cove is a small, sheltered beach with a lot of charm. This sandy cove is backed by cliffs and surrounded by lush greenery, making it a peaceful spot for a day by the sea.
Dogs are welcome at Readymoney Cove apart from between 10am and 6pm in July and August, and its calm waters make it a safe place for dogs to paddle. The coastal path leading from the beach offers stunning views of the Fowey Estuary, perfect for a scenic stroll with your pup.
After your visit to the beach, explore the quaint streets of Fowey together, where you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly spots to enjoy a meal or a drink - we recommend Havener’s, a charmingly nautical joint that’s right on the water, with cosy accommodation for longer visits.
