Top things to do when the clocks go forward in the South West

Truly a sign of summer just on the horizon, the clocks go forward on the 31st of March gracing us with an extra hour of light to make the very most of.

We’ve rounded up a few of our favourite ways to pass the time across both Cornwall and Devon – from upcoming festivals across the regions to vibrant floral displays and, of course, the best beaches for those ever-elusive ‘beach days’ to savour the sunshine.

With today, the 20th of March, officially marking the first day of spring, why not raise a cold pint, fresh like the sea breeze, and toast to the memories you’ve yet to make…

Head to festivals in the South West

Cornwall and Devon both hold host to a vibrant calendar of events, catering to a range of festival-goers – whether you’re a foodie in hunt of the most mouth-watering ingredients or a dancing machine at the main stage, there’s something for everyone this summer.

Just a hop, skip and jump away from our brewery, the highly-anticipated Eden Sessions will be kicking off this June and July, with dates spread across the two months. With the line-up including JLS, Fatboy Slim, Anne Marie and more, each night offers a uniquely intimate experience. Plus, your ticket also allows for entry into the Eden Project, perfect for exploring this beautiful setting in more depth. A must-add to your Cornish bucket list, this is a staple music festival. Why not stay at the nearby Rashleigh Arms, and pop by our brewery for a pre-show pint?

Another summer stand-out is Tunes in the Dunes (17th – 19th May) – a weekend jam-packed with live music on the beach! Grab a taste of the coast, with our refreshing korev lager available throughout the festival, and keep the feel-good energy flowing. With headliners including McFly, Craig David and more, dance the night away – no shoes required, as long as you don’t mind sandy toes! Whilst still a little later down the line, you’ll also find korev at the après-sea event of the summer – SkyBar. Hosted at a variety of venues across the South West, gather your gang and book your tickets ahead of time.

Of course, no festival run down would be complete without the mention of Boardmasters. Based in Newquay, the weekend is a firm fan-favourite within the surf community and it’s not hard to see why. Featuring not only an incredible surf competition but also a consistent line-up with this year’s featuring Sam Fender, Chase & Status and Stormzy. If you don't fancy camping the full weekend, stay at the Great Western for a few extra home comforts!

Aside from music festivals, there’s a rich variety of local events providing a truly authentic South West experience. From Porthleven Food Festival and Falmouth’s Sea Shanty, to Dartmouth Royal Regatta and Plymouth’s Seafood Festival – leave with cherished memories.

Plan a garden visit

Escape the hustle and bustle of the festival crowds, and make the very most of the lighter hours strolling through colourfully curated gardens across the South West. With a unique, sub-tropical climate unlike anywhere else in the UK, both Devon and Cornwall come alive as the clocks move forward.

Travelling first to South Devon, Coleton Fishacre just outside of Kingswear, boasts stunning sea views alongside its rich history, dating back to the 1920s. Oozing with stories of the past, wander through the grounds – your path bordered by woodland and wildflowers.

For a true countryside escape, stay at the Masons Arms in Branscombe and plan a day trip to the nearby Bicton Botanical Gardens. With over 60 acres of gorgeous garden design, representing classical formal design, you’ll be charmed by your surroundings. Perfect for all the family, they even have their own railway on site! Reconnect with nature, savouring the late evening sunshine.

If you’re in Cornwall, why not plan a mystical visit to the Lost Gardens of Heligan? A 200-acre network of magical paths previously lost to the brambles, the gardens were lovingly restored in 1990 and have since become a wildlife-lovers paradise.

Spend lazy days by the beach

With the sunshine finally showing its face after a few rain-ridden months, there’s no better way to spend the extra hour afforded us by the clocks going forward, than whiling away the hours from dawn till dusk on golden stretches of sand.

You’ll truly be spoilt for choice when it comes to finding your favourite – whether you explore Carbis Bay solo, stop by the Pedn Olva for a tipple or two, or spend days with all the family at the Fistral Beach in Newquay. In Devon, discover corners of the Jurassic Coast and marvel at the rugged coastline's breathtaking beauty.
